Two People In A Field, With No Word For Tomorrow
They have to part, and they want to meet again. Not now — later. But there are no clocks, no calendars, no hours, no Tuesday. There is not even a word for tomorrow.
So they do the only thing they can do. One of them points at the sun and says: when it stands up there again, that is when we meet.
Watch what just happened, because it is the most important moment in this whole course. Those two people did not measure time. They created it — by finding something in the sky that keeps happening, and using the gap between one happening and the next as a ruler.
Nature supplies the repeating event. Man supplies the counting. And every hour, day, week and year you have ever used was built that way.
The time is in the angle between two.
Why This Matters To Somebody Watching A Chart
Because there are two clocks running at once, and only one of them is honest.
The first is the natural clock — the sun, the moon, the planets. It never stops, never skips, and it ran long before anybody was watching. The second is the manmade clock on your wall, which is a copy of the first, and which we have bent and patched for centuries.
You can catch us in the act. September means the seventh month. October means the eighth, November the ninth, December the tenth. The numbers are baked into the names — because the year sensibly began in March until somebody pushed two extra months onto the front.
The sky is exact. The calendar drifts. Time anything precisely and you must stop trusting the days and go back to the honest clock.
